Eight Perfect Murders
Eight Perfect Murders by Malcom Kershaw
Clever and surprising, Eight Perfect Murders jumps from one startling plot twist to the next. Nothing is what it seems, marriage, friends, FBI investigators, who can you trust?
In a tip of the hat to the old style mysteries and thrillers of Agatha Christie, John MacDonald, Patricia Highsmith, the story careens to a final stunning conclusion that will keep most readers guessing until the end.
Beartown by Fredrik Backman
Fredrik Backman’ s latest novel is the story of a hockey town rocked by scandal and the town's moral inability to deal with it. In a town whose sole identity is wrapped up in its Junior Hockey League and star player, the idea that their march toward a national victory could be derailed is inconceivable. Beartown explodes after rape charges are brought against Kevin, the star player and son of privilege and influence, who is nearly untouchable because of his talent.
The victim is Maya, the teenage daughter of the hockey club’s much-admired general manager, Peter, another Beartown golden boy. A hockey star who made it to the NHL, Peter came home to bring winning hockey back to Beartown. Now, after years of despair, the local club is on the cusp of a championship, but not without Kevin.
Like Friday Night Lights, this is about more than youth sports; it's part coming-of-age novel and part study of moral failure. While the story is dark at times, love, sacrifice, and the bonds of friendship and family shine through, ultimately offering hope and even redemption for some.
Readers don't have to be die-hard sports fans to recognize the passion, obsession, and at times, irrationality that can be part of the game. It's when that fanaticism clashes with 'real world' morality that people learn hard lessons and come face to face with their true selves.
