Federal Republic of Germany is established

The Federal Republic of Germany (popularly known as West Germany) is formally established as a separate and independent nation. This action marked the effective end to any discussion of reuniting East and West Germany.

Outlaws Bonnie and Clyde shot to death in stolen Ford

On this day in 1934, wanted outlaws Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker are shot to death by Texas and Louisiana state police officers as they attempt to escape apprehension in a stolen 1934 Ford Deluxe near Bienville Parish, Louisiana.

New York Public Library dedicated

In a ceremony presided over by President William Howard Taft, the New York Public Library, the largest marble structure ever constructed in the United States, is dedicated in New York City.

Forgotten Civil War hero honored

Sergeant William Harvey Carney is awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery on July 18, 1863, while fighting for the Union cause as a member of the 54th Massachusetts Colored Infantry.

Margaret Fuller is born

Writer and editor Margaret Fuller, who inspired other Americans to devote themselves to learning, is born on this day.Fuller was born in Massachusetts and grew up during the Transcendentalist movement.

Reference Databases & Periodicals Our online databases & reference eBooks provide instant access to thousands of magazines, newspapers, and professional journals—as well as business and investment, science, history, literature, and genealogical sources. Most of these databases are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from your home or office.
Recommended Internet Sites Our reference librarians have assembled a list of reliable Internet sites. Simply browse these sites by category to find the information you need.
