The month of February has been declared Black History Month by the United States President every year since 1976, but the origins of the month and the idea of celebrating and promoting African American history and achievement go all the way back to 1915. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has compiled and digitized autobiographical, biographical and fictional accounts of fugitive and former slaves struggling for freedom and human rights from the eighteenth century up until 1920. These writings are important in learning about African American history and literature, and are available to anyone online.
The Ohio Statehouse is celebrating Black History Month with living history presentations, where interpreters will portray important Ohio and U.S. African-American figures, and will give historical and dramatic presentations. During Statehouse Tours in February, a special focus will be given to the George Washington Williams Memorial, a tribute to Ohio’s first legislator. There will also be a special art exhibit in the map room and soul food menu in the Café.
