Frozen in Time by Mitchell Zuckoff
“The Arctic is an unscrupulous enemy…it strikes without warning…”
“When you fight in the Arctic, you fight on the Arctic’s terms…the Arctic shows no mercy to a loser.”
These passages from Frozen in Time by Mitchell Zuckoff illustrate the challenges faced by the survivors whose planes went down over the Arctic and Greenland during World War II. In 1942, after a U.S. military plane crashed on Greenland, a rescue plane attempted to recover the downed B-17 but hit a severe storm and disappeared. The whiteness of the land and sky blended to make flying extremely difficult and dangerous. “It was like flying in milk,” said one World War II pilot.
This is an incredible story about the endurance and unselfishness displayed by brave World War II pilots caught in this part of the world. Zuckoff does an excellent job re-telling the harrowing experiences of these men; and you’ll find yourself rooting for them as they struggle to survive the bitter cold, starvation, and uncertainty of being rescued.
Untamed by Glennon Doyle
Untamed is an intimate memoir and a wake-up call for women to look at ourselves, trust ourselves, honor our bodies, make peace with anger, and recognize our truest instincts.
Doyle discovers a family is not it’s structure, but the ability to bring everything you have to the table, while engaging all family members to do the same. A complete “wholeness,” that is family. Does a good mother slowly die for her child or does she teach them how to live fully? How can you navigate divorce and form a new family, or do you sink into a depression of “it will never happen!”
Doyle insists: “The braver we are, the luckier we get.”
