Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds
Fifteen-year-old Will's big brother has been shot and killed. According to the rules that Will has grown up with it's now his job to kill the person responsible. He easily finds his brother's gun and gets on the elevator at the 8th floor to head down. At each floor, a different person gets on to tell a story. Each of these people is already dead. As they relate their tales, the reader learns about the cycle of violence that Will has grown up with. Spanning a mere one minute and seven seconds, the reader is given an intense snapshot of the chain reaction caused by pulling a trigger. Recommended for grades 8 up.
Picture Book Selection: Windows
Before your city goes to sleep, you might head out for a walk, your dog at your side as you go out the door. Anything can happen on such a walk. One boy catches glimpses of the lives around him exploring his neighborhood in the almost-night. Recommended for ages 4 and up.
