The Dark Dark by Samantha Hunt
The Dark Dark is a collection of small but gripping stories that are simultaneously unnerving and beautifully written. The stories play out from the perspectives of various characters, mostly women, and follow their internal dialogues as they deal with things from the mundane aspects of everyday life to the wildly vivid supernatural twists the author injects.
For example, in “Beast,” a young, anxious woman does not know how to talk to her husband anymore—a problem she desperately wants to fix since she began turning into a deer each night. “The Yellow” is about a perennial foul-up and his life-changing quest to reinvent himself, inspired by a can of paint and a bad ventilation system.
For readers looking for something honest with its emotions, and just odd enough to keep you up, this is a great read.
Picture Book Selection: The Nuts: Keep Rolling!
Hazel and Wally Nut are off on another adventure. After rolling in mud and seeing that the more they roll, the bigger they grow, they keep rolling until they are the size of cats, dogs, and elephants! But, each time they get bigger, a new challenge is thrown their way. The only thing they know to do is....keep rolling! Then, the rain comes and washes away all the mud and goo until Hazel and Wally are small again. This fun picture book by Eric Litwin (Pete the Cat) has songs, rhyme and pictures that will keep children entertained. Recommended for Pres-Gr 1.
